August 9th is the Day of Rememberance for Radbod.
On this day, King Radbod of Frisia was going to be baptized. As a target for early christian missionaries, he paused his baptism to ask what fate had befallen his ancestors who had died loyal to the Asatru religion.
The missionaries told him that his heathen ancestors were burning in hell. Radbod replied, “Then I would rather live there with my ancestors than go to heaven with a parcel of beggars.”
His baptism was cancelled, the aliens were expelled, and Frisia remained free.
